NLC says N70k is poverty wage and I am thinking about my own numbers

I saw the NLC announcement about N70,000 being a poverty wage and I just sat there doing the math in my head. My guys, I ran the calculation on what it actually costs to exist in Lagos right now. Rent alone in a decent area, not even VI, is pushing N2 million per year. That is N167,000 per month before you eat, before transport, before your data subscription for work.

N70,000 is not a wage. It is survival money with heavy luck. I remember when I was at the fintech earning N180,000 and I thought I was winning. But that was 2021. Now N180,000 is what a junior developer asks for and still struggles. The numbers say someone on N70,000 is spending 80% of their income on rent and transport alone. The remaining 20% has to cover food, health, family obligations, everything.

Interesting how we keep having this conversation about minimum wage while the real problem is that the naira keeps losing value against everything. I wonder what the actual number would be if someone calculated it honestly based on current prices of garri, beans, and rent.
