The day I turned down my dream job for my husband's sake

Two years ago, I got an offer that would have changed everything. A senior HR manager role at a top Lagos firm. Double my salary. The kind of job I told myself I'd die for back in university.

I sat with the offer letter in my hand for three days. My husband, Musa, he runs a small furniture workshop in Wuse. Business has been struggling since the economy went bad. When I told him about the offer, he just nodded and said, "If this is what you want, we will manage."

But I looked at our daughter, Fatima. She was five then, just settled in her school. I thought about pulling her out, moving her to Lagos, leaving Musa alone with his business that was barely surviving. My mother called me and said, "Zainab, a marriage is not two people chasing their own dreams. Sometimes you carry the load so the other person can breathe."

I turned it down. I told myself I'd regret it. But the funny thing is, I don't. Musa's business is better now, not where we want it but better. Fatima is thriving in the same school. And I found a different kind of success in the parastatal , slower, smaller, but mine.

I learned that ambition isn't always about going forward. Sometimes it's about knowing when to stay still so the people you love can catch up.
