I Was a Gambling Addict for Three Years. I Lost Everything Before I Found My Way Back.

This story begins in 2021, right after I finished NYSC and moved to Lagos for work. I was 25, earning 80k a month as a customer service rep in Ikeja. The job was boring, the money was tight, and I needed something to make me feel alive.

It started small. A colleague introduced me to a betting app. I put 500 naira on a football accumulator and won 12k. The rush was unlike anything I had ever felt. That first win hooked me. I started placing bets every day. Small amounts at first, then bigger. I told myself I was smart, that I had a system.

Within six months, I was spending 70% of my salary on betting. I stopped eating properly, stopped going out with friends. My landlord started knocking for rent I had not paid in three months. I borrowed from everyone who would lend me money , colleagues, old schoolmates, even my mother's church friend. I told them it was for a business investment.

The low point came in December 2022. I had taken a loan of 150k from a microfinance bank, plus 80k from a shylock in Oshodi. I put everything on one match , Arsenal vs. Manchester United. I was so sure. Arsenal was winning 2-0 at halftime. I was already calculating how I would pay back everyone and still have profit. Then Manchester United scored three goals in the second half. I lost everything.

That night, I sat in my room in Egbeda, staring at the wall, and I realised I had become a person I did not recognise. I had not called my mother in two months. I had stopped going to church. I had no savings, no peace, no self-respect. I was just a shell chasing a high that never lasted.

What saved me was my elder sister. She found out when the shylock called her phone threatening to disgrace me. She did not shout. She just came to my place, sat me down, and said, 'You are better than this. Let us fix it together.' She paid off my debts , 230k total , on the condition that I delete every betting app and give her control of my salary for six months. I agreed. I had no fight left in me.

The withdrawal was hell. For the first three weeks, I could not sleep. My hands would shake. I would find myself opening my phone to place a bet before remembering I had nothing to open. I cried more times than I care to admit. But slowly, the fog lifted. I started reading again. I went back to church. I reconnected with friends who had given up on me.

Today, I am 30 years old. I have a stable job, a small savings, and a peace I cannot trade for anything. I still watch football, but I no longer bet. If you are reading this and you are deep in that hole, hear me: you are not weak. That addiction is stronger than you think. But it is not stronger than God, and it is not stronger than the people who love you. Let them help you. Let yourself be saved.
