Yaba bike man saved me from my own phone thief
3 months ago
Last week I was walking through Yaba market, phone in hand like a proper Lagos rookie. One minute I'm checking a client's message, next minute the phone is gone. Just like that. Hand empty, pocket light, brain trying to process what just happened.
I turned around and this guy is already 20 meters away weaving through the crowd. Now I'm not a runner but something snapped. I started chasing and shouting "Ole! Ole!" like my life depended on it. People just watched. Nobody moved. Then this okada man parked nearby just gunned his bike and cut the thief off. The guy dropped the phone and disappeared into the market.
The bike man picked it up, handed it to me and said "Oya next time hold am better." He didn't even wait for thank you. Just zoomed off. I stood there holding my phone like God just gave me a second chance. In this Lagos where everybody says nobody cares, one random bike man proved them wrong. Makes me wonder how many small mercies we miss because we're too busy being cynical.
