I stole from my company for two years and nobody caught me
3 months ago
I worked for a fintech startup in Yaba 2019 to 2021. The CEO was this rich guy who treated us like we were replaceable. Talked down to everyone, paid below market, expected 80-hour weeks. I was bitter.
I discovered a loophole in the expense reporting system. I started adding fake vendor invoices, small amounts. ₦50k here, ₦80k there. Nothing big enough to trigger an audit. Over two years I took close to ₦2.8 million. Used it to pay my rent, clear my brother's school fees, buy my mother a generator. Nobody ever asked a single question.
The thing is, I don't feel guilty. That company is still running. The CEO bought another Benz last year. But I can't tell anyone in my family where the money came from. When my mother prays for me and says 'God bless your hard work,' I just nod. Some blessings come from places you can't explain. I think about it sometimes and wonder if I am a bad person. But then I remember how he treated us. Still not sure where I land on this one.
