A final year student of the Marketing department at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic in Itori, Ogun State, was killed during a Monday night robbery in the Eruku area. Armed robbers attacked and she lost her life. The next day, students blocked the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway in protest, paralyzing traffic for hours. No arrests have been made yet.

The NANS South-West Coordinator, Josiah Adeyemo, led a delegation to the school and said, "Students deserve to learn in a peaceful and secure environment. Protecting students and educational institutions should remain a top priority for both the government and security agencies." He has called on the IGP, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, and Governor Dapo Abiodun to deploy security personnel to off-campus neighborhoods immediately. The Eleruku of Eruku Kingdom, Oba Ajagungbade Gbadewolu Atobatele, has deployed ten local security operatives, but that is a bandage on a wound that needs surgery.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Goke Rauf, expressed deep sorrow and announced plans to build new hostels to reduce off-campus vulnerability, strengthen perimeter security, and rehabilitate internal roads. These are good plans, but how many more students must die before implementation becomes urgent? The question is simple: what will it take for the government to treat student safety as the emergency it is?
