UK councillor said Nigerians should be 'melted down' for potholes

P

I saw this story today and I am still processing it. A Reform UK councillor in Sunderland, one Glenn Gibbins, has been charged under the UK Communications Act for a social media post he allegedly made in 2024 where he said Nigerians should be "melted down and used to fill potholes." The Crown Prosecution Service authorised the charge, calling it "grossly offensive." Gibbins was elected in May 2026 and will appear in court in August.

What gets me is the timeline. Reform UK suspended him initially, then reinstated him in June after he apologised and received a final written warning. So they knew about this before the election, let him run, and now the criminal case is moving forward. The party spokesperson said they are "monitoring the verdict closely." Not exactly a strong condemnation, is it?

This is the same kind of casual dehumanisation that Nigerians abroad have been dealing with for decades. It is not just a joke. When an elected official says something like that, it validates the worst instincts in others. I wonder how many Nigerians in Sunderland feel safe today knowing their local councillor once suggested they be melted down. What do you make of this kind of thing happening in 2026?
