The day my sister's wedding almost split our family in two

Two years ago, my younger sister Amina called me crying. She said she was getting married to Musa, a man from the family our father had quarrelled with for years. I nearly dropped my phone. You see, in Kaduna, family feuds are not small matter. Our fathers had not spoken in over a decade, and my own father swore he would never attend any event where that man's family is present. Amina knew this, yet she chose love. Wallahi, that girl has always been stubborn. My mother called me the next day, her voice shaking. She said, "Zainab, your father is ready to disown her. Please talk to her." I had to be the bridge. I spoke to Amina, I spoke to my father, I even spoke to Musa's people quietly. It was like negotiating a peace treaty with government parastatal logic. Everyone had conditions, everyone had pride. The wedding day was tense. I was scared my father would walk out. But when Amina came in looking so happy, I saw my father's eyes soften. He didn't smile, but he stayed. The system is slow, but it moves eventually. My honest counsel? Sometimes we need to be the bigger person for the people we love.
