I am 47, a civil servant in Ilorin, and I have been married for 15 years. For the last 10 of those years, I have kept a secret bank account my wife knows nothing about. It started small, just saving 5,000 naira from my salary every month, money I said went to transport or lunch. But over time, it grew. I added money from side hustles, from selling my old motorcycle, even from a small poultry business I run with a friend. Now, I have close to 4 million naira in that account. My wife thinks we are managing. She is always complaining about how school fees and food prices are eating us. She has stopped asking for new clothes, she looks at things in the market and walks away. Sometimes I want to tell her, to just give her the money and see her smile. But then I remember why I started. The first year of our marriage, her younger brother was sick. She took money from our joint savings, money I had been keeping for our own house rent, and gave it to her family. She did not even tell me until the rent was due. I said nothing then, but I never forgot. I told myself I would never be left empty-handed like that again. Now I am sitting on this money, and I feel like a fraud. I love her, I do. But I cannot trust her with money, not fully. And I am scared that if she finds out, it will destroy everything we have built. So I keep quiet. I watch her struggle, and I say nothing. I have become the very thing I hated in her. I am not proud of this. But I have learned that in marriage, money is not just money. It is power, it is trust, it is a weapon. And I have been holding this one for too long. I just hope that when I die, she finds it and understands I was not trying to hurt her. I was just trying to protect myself.
