I Paid Someone to Write My WAEC. I Have Been Lying to My Father for Eight Years.

Back in 2018, I was in SS2 in Ilorin and my father was already talking about my future like I was the next professor. I was the first son, the one who carried the family name. But I was failing everything except English and Literature. The pressure was too much, so when a guy in my area told me he knew someone who could 'help' with WAEC, I didn't think twice. I paid him 35,000 naira from the money my mother gave me for my school fees. I told her the school needed it for a practical. The exam came and the man wrote everything for me. I sat there, copying from his answer sheet like I was the one thinking. I passed with eight As and Bs. My father cried. He called all his brothers, he bought me a new phone, he told everyone that his son was going to be a doctor. I smiled and said 'Yes sir, God willing.' But inside, I was shaking. I knew that if they ever called me to verify, the whole thing would collapse. I used that same result to apply for university. I got admission to study Medicine in Ilorin. My father sold a piece of land to pay my acceptance fee. I have been in this course for four years now. I am struggling, but I am managing. The lie is still standing. My father thinks I am brilliant. He does not know that I cannot even solve a simple chemistry equation without my notes. I have thought about confessing so many times. But every time I see the joy in his eyes when he talks about my graduation, I swallow it. I am scared that if he finds out, it will kill him. I have carried this guilt for eight years. Sometimes I wonder if I am living my life or just acting it. If any young person is reading this, let me tell you: do not start a lie you cannot finish. The result is not worth the weight. My father's trust is the only thing I have left, and I am holding it with borrowed hands.
