Obasanjo drops bombshell: Picking Atiku was my biggest mistake

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has finally said what many have suspected for years: choosing Atiku Abubakar as his running mate in 1999 was the single biggest mistake of his presidency. He made this confession during a fireside chat with Charles "Charly Boy" Oputa at the launch of the Charly Boy Foundation in Lagos.

Obasanjo said, "If I had known him as I came to know him later, I would not have picked him." He added, "Thank God his actions and reactions did not overwhelm me or divert my focus from Nigeria. There is no bitterness. He did things he believed he should do, and God did things He needed to do."

This is the same man who is now being courted by politicians ahead of 2027. If Obasanjo can admit this publicly, what does it say about the alliances being formed today? Are we about to see another mistake repeated?
