Cardinal Onaiyekan vs Presidency: Who really speaks for Nigerian Christians?
Cardinal John Onaiyekan don land himself for trouble with the Presidency after he criticise Tinubu administration, and Daniel Bwala don fire back say the cardinal was only speaking for Catholics, not all Christians. Bwala even alleged say the Catholic Church was the institution rooting for Peter Obi during the 2023 election, quoting Obi's 2022 'take back your country' slogan. This one na serious political tea wey dey divide the house.
Bwala wrote on his X account on Saturday, 'Cardinal Onaiyekan, wasn't speaking for Christian's, he was speaking for Catholics, the very institutions rooting for Peter Obi @PeterObi infact likely the institution where Peter Obi also said in 2022 "take back your country".' He went further to say the cardinal is 'more political than spiritual' and that not all Catholics supported Obi. The man even dragged it say the same priest wey go rebuke members wey say 'we are suffering' but tell dem to say 'we are doing great' even when dem dey suffer. That one na pure shade.
But here's the thing, when religious leaders criticise government, we always wan dismiss dem as political. But if the economy dey bad, if fuel dey cost, if insecurity dey, who supposed talk am? The bishops visited the President and told him the truth, and instead of listening, the Presidency dey try to discredit the messenger. Bwala say Tinubu's position is backed by 'facts, statistics and numbers' but ordinary Nigerians wey dey feel the pain no need statistics to know say things hard. Be honest, una think say religious leaders should keep quiet when government dey fail, or na only politicians wey fit talk?
