Peter Obi Drags Tinubu Over Hunger Comment, Says It Is Insensitive

Peter Obi has finally said what many of us have been thinking since President Bola Tinubu told the Catholic bishops that hunger has always existed in Nigeria, even before he was born. I mean, is that the best defence you have when your own policies have made things worse for millions?

Peter Obi, the 2027 NDC presidential candidate, released a statement on Friday reacting to that comment, and he did not hold back. He said the President's remarks are insensitive and that leadership is measured not by the challenges inherited but by the results achieved. He also brought receipts: about 17 million Nigerians were facing acute food insecurity before this administration, but now it is around 35 million. And extreme poverty has jumped from 87 million to nearly 140 million, making Nigeria the country with the highest number of people living in extreme poverty globally. Those are not small numbers, and they are not just statistics, they are our people.

I am tired of this government and its supporters trying to gaslight us. When we complain about hunger, they say it has always been there. When we talk about insecurity, they say we are being unpatriotic. At what point do we hold them accountable for what they have done or failed to do? The President should apologise and stop making excuses, because the people suffering today are not interested in history lessons, they want food on their table. Am I the only one that thinks this comment was a slap in the face of every Nigerian who cannot afford a meal?
