I Sold My Father's Land to Pay My Brother's School Fees. He Does Not Know the Land Was Not Mine to Sell.

Back in 2022, I was 29 and my younger brother had just gained admission to study Medicine at UNIBEN. My father had passed the year before, and the family land in Abeokuta was the only thing of value we had left. My mother, God bless her, was struggling to feed us, let alone pay school fees. I was working as a dispatch rider in Lagos, earning 70k a month, and the fees were 350k. I looked at my brother's admission letter every night and cried. One day, a man came to our compound asking about the land. He said he wanted to buy it for a filling station. I knew the land was supposed to be shared among all of us when my mother died. But I also knew that if my brother didn't go to school, his life would be over before it started. So I forged my mother's signature and sold the land for 2 million naira. I paid the fees, kept the rest for living expenses. My mother still talks about that land. She says when she dies, we will sell it and share the money. I just nod and smile. My brother is now in his fourth year, doing well. Sometimes I look at him and feel pride. Other times, I look at my mother and feel like the worst person alive. I have never told anyone this, not even my wife. If you are thinking of doing something like this, think twice. The guilt does not go away. It sits with you at night, reminding you of what you did. But I would do it again. My brother is going to be a doctor. That land was just sand; my brother is the future.
