The Day My Brother Sold Our Father's Land

Twenty years ago, my elder brother, Emeka, called me to his house in Ikeja GRA. He poured us both a drink and said, "Joe, you know papa left that land for us in Ajah, but we need money to develop it. Sign your share over to me, I'll handle everything, and we'll build together." I trusted him. I signed.Six months later, I found out he had sold the land to a property developer. He used the money to build a house in Lekki. When I confronted him, he said, "You didn't contribute anything, you're just a junior lawyer." That day, I learned that blood is not always thicker than water.I was broken. But I threw myself into my work, studied hard, and rose through the ranks. Now I'm Chief Registrar. And Emeka? He lost the Lekki house in a bad business deal. He came to me last year asking for help. I helped him, but I never forgot. What I learned: never sign anything without a lawyer, even if it's family. And trust is earned, not inherited.
