The day my pension disappeared and I sold my radios

I woke up that morning like every other day. 5am, garden, kettle on the stove. Then the phone rang. My old colleague from the ministry, the one I trusted with everything, was calling to say the pension payment we had been expecting for months had been diverted. Not delayed. Diverted. I sat down on the veranda and just stared at the sky for a long time.

My wife found me there. She didn't ask what happened. She just brought me tea and sat beside me. That was when I knew I had to act. I sold my vintage radios, the ones I had collected for thirty years. The Philips, the Grundig, the old Murphy that still played better than anything modern. I sold them to a dealer in Dugbe for a fraction of what they were worth. It felt like selling pieces of my own memory.

But here is the thing. That dealer, a young man named Tunde, he saw my face and he gave me extra five thousand naira. He said, "Baba, this one is not business. This one is respect." I never forgot that. The money was not what saved us. It was the kindness. In the end, the pension came through, after many prayers and many visits. But I learned that when everything is taken from you, what remains is how people treat you. And that is something no thief can steal.
