My landlord almost collected my scholarship money for 'light bill'
Last week I came back from lectures and my landlord was waiting outside my room with a paper in his hand. I greeted him properly, 'Good evening oga.' He just shoved the paper at me and said, 'You people are owing NEPA money from last month, you need to pay.' I looked at the figure and my chest just sank. It was almost half of my feeding money for the whole week.
I told him, 'Oga, I paid last month o. You even have the receipt.' He said, 'Ah, that one na for the old bill. This one na new charge.' My guy, I swear at that point I just wanted to japa right there. No visa, no ticket, just walk to the airport and beg them to carry me anywhere. But I remembered my mother's voice when she was praying for me, and I just took the paper and said, 'Okay oga, I will bring it by Friday.'
That night I calculated my feeding budget again. 2,500 naira per day, I cut it to 1,500. Garri and okro for three days. But you know what? That experience just strengthened my resolve. I am not going to live like this forever. Every time I feel like giving up on my online courses or my freelance work, I remember that paper. That bill is my motivation. My brother, if you are reading this and you are tired of this life, just know that this struggle is temporary. One day we go laugh about all these things. God when?
