The day my wife caught me 'working' at the viewing centre
3 months ago
My wife don finally catch me. After 38 years of marriage, she think say I don become football addict. But the truth? I just dey enjoy the AC for the viewing centre. In my time, we watch football for free for the village square, under the mango tree. Now, you pay 500 naira, sit for plastic chair, and the generator go pack up during the penalty shootout. Kai!
Last week, I tell my wife say I dey go 'ministerial meeting'. She follow me sharp sharp. When she see me for the viewing centre, she just laugh and say, 'So this is the ministry you dey serve?' The young boys there were shouting 'Goal!' for nothing. The match no even start yet. I just look at her and say, 'My dear, this is the only place where my blood pressure dey normal.' She shake her head, buy me pure water, and leave. Now she dey call the viewing centre 'my second office'.
The thing wey dey pain me be say, these days, the young boys dey watch match for phone, small small. No more community feeling. But my generation, we still dey gather. Because when the referee make mistake, we need somebody to argue with. The Yoruba say, 'A word is enough for the wise.' But for viewing centre, words no dey enough. You need to shout, gesticulate, and even stand up. Abi, who go help us shout if we stay for house?
