The Day Customs Seized My First Container and I Chose Family Over Money

Back in 2022, I pooled everything I had with my cousin, Emeka, to import refurbished iPhones from Dubai. We were young, hungry, and sure we were about to blow. The container finally landed at Apapa, and I was already calculating profit margins in my head. Omo, the money was sweet before it even arrived.

Then the call came. Customs seized the container. Fake document. My cousin's contact in Dubai had given us forged papers. I stood at the port, watching them tow my future away, and my cousin couldn't even look me in the eye.

They gave me a choice: testify against Emeka, get a reduced fine, maybe recover something. Or take the full loss alone. I looked at my cousin, the boy I grew up with, who was already shaking like a leaf. I told the officer, "It's my fault. I take full responsibility."

We lost everything that day. About ₦8 million down the drain. But you know what? Emeka and I are still close. He's now working in Lagos, sends me money whenever he can. That day taught me that trust is more expensive than any container, and family is the only profit that never depreciates.
