My landlord increased my rent because I fixed his generator

Last month my landlord called me, all smiles, saying he wanted to discuss something. I thought it was about the rent, which was already due. Instead, he tells me he's increasing the rent by 20% because, and I quote, "the property is now in better condition."

Turns out, when his generator broke down during that long NEPA strike, I called my mechanic cousin to fix it. I paid for the parts myself, about ₦45,000, because I needed light for work. My landlord saw the new parts and decided the flat is now worth more.

I just sat there, staring at him. In what world does improving someone else's property mean you get punished? I asked him, "Oga, so I should have let the generator die?" He just smiled and said, "Business is business."

I'm not renewing my lease. I'm moving to a place where my landlord doesn't treat me like a business expense. But I'm still angry. How do you people handle landlords who see every improvement as an excuse to hike rent?
