Christian groups now begging Trump over Muslim-Muslim ticket. Wetin happen to our sovereignty?
The Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria has taken its fight over the 2027 Muslim-Muslim ticket all the way to Washington, petitioning President Donald Trump, the US Congress and diplomatic missions. They are warning that the arrangement threatens Christians, especially in the North, and they want the international community to pressurise Nigeria on religious balance.
Now, I understand the fear. Since 2023, when President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima ran on that ticket, many Christians have felt sidelined. The petition even quotes the group saying the continuation "could further deepen religious divisions and political exclusion." They are also asking the US to keep Nigeria on that Country of Particular Concern list and investigate alleged Arab influence in our politics. That is serious talk.
But here is my problem. We are a sovereign nation. If we have a problem with our own leadership, we should sort it out at the ballot box, not by running to a foreign president who has his own record of anti-Muslim rhetoric. Awolowo fought for our independence so we would not be begging foreigners to fix our internal affairs. This petition may get attention abroad, but it will not change the APC's calculation. The real question is: what are Nigerian Christians doing beyond petitions to build a political alternative that can actually win in 2027? Be honest, is this not just another round of crying to outsiders while the real battle is at home?
