Back in 2021, I was 27, working as an accountant at a small logistics company in Enugu. Money was tight, my mother was sick, and I had just taken a loan to cover her hospital bills. The company had a policy of paying suppliers in cash, and I was the one handling the payments. I started by inflating one invoice by 15,000 naira. Just once, I told myself. But once became twice, and twice became a habit. Before I knew it, I had taken close to 800,000 naira over two years, hiding it in small increments that no one seemed to notice. The day I got caught, it wasn't a grand audit or a suspicious boss. It was a simple reconciliation error. My MD, a man in his 50s, called me into his office and laid the papers on his desk. I thought I was finished. I was ready to be handed over to the police, to have my name dragged through the mud. But he just looked at me and said, 'I know what you did. I have two options: I can call the police, or you can work it off. You choose.' I chose to work it off. I spent the next year and a half with my salary garnished, doing extra shifts, and learning more about the business than I ever did before. Omo, the shame was heavy. But that man taught me something I will never forget. He said, 'The money you took, you took because you were desperate. But the trust you broke, that is what will follow you.' I am not proud of what I did. But I am grateful that he gave me a chance to make it right. Now I run my own small business, and I make sure every naira is accounted for. The lesson? There is no amount of money that is worth your integrity. And sometimes, the people you wrong can be the ones to show you the way back. God knows I will never go down that road again.
