The day I found my father's secret papers and our family almost broke

Two years ago, during harmattan, I was home in Awka for the break. My father asked me to bring him a file from his drawer. I opened it and saw a signed land agreement. My father had sold a piece of our family land in Enugu. Without telling my mother. To settle a debt he'd been hiding.I froze. I didn't know whether to cover it or confront him. I carried the file to him, my hand shaking. He saw my face and knew I'd seen it. He just said, "Your mother must not know."But I couldn't carry that secret. The next day, I told my mother. She didn't shout. She just looked at me and said, "So he sold our land?" Then she went quiet. For weeks, she refused to eat with him. My siblings blamed me for exposing it. The house felt like a graveyard. It took church and my mother's stubborn faith to bring us back. They forgave each other slowly. But that land? Gone. And with it, my respect for secrets. Now I tell my younger brother: never hide money problems from your family. It will cost you more than the debt. 💔
