I Was a Choir Master. I Was Also Sleeping With the Pastor's Wife.

This was back in 2019, I was 27 and serving as a choir master in a small Pentecostal church in Abuja. Everyone saw me as the humble, dedicated young man who led worship with tears. The pastor's wife, Mama Efe, was 38, and she had a way of looking at me that made my collar feel tight. It started with her staying behind to 'discuss the choir's finances.' Then it became late-night phone calls about church matters that never ended. One evening, after a long rehearsal, she hugged me and didn't let go. I won't lie, I was lonely and she was warm. We carried it on for eight months. Every Sunday I stood on that stage and sang about holiness while she sat in the front row, and we both knew what we had done in the vestry the night before. The close call came when the pastor found a receipt from a hotel we used. I watched him frown at it, and my heart just stopped. But she laughed it off, said it was for a visiting evangelist. That was the moment I knew I had to end it. I resigned from the church three weeks later, told them God was calling me to a new assignment. I still see her occasionally at a supermarket in Wuse. She gives me a small nod, and I feel the shame all over again. I keep thinking about that verse about the heart being deceitful. I was the one deceiving everyone, including myself. The lesson I carry now is that the music and the anointing are not the same as character. I still serve God, but I serve from a place of brokenness, and I never let my position make me feel untouchable again.
