Wike vs Amaechi: The South South brotherhood question

P

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has thrown a heavy jab at Rotimi Amaechi over his 2027 vice presidential ambition, and the whole thing is classic Nigerian political drama. Speaking at a media chat in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike said the South South people have not forgotten how Amaechi worked against Goodluck Jonathan's re-election in 2015. His exact words: "When Jonathan from the South South wanted to run for the second term, Amaechi came out on national television and said 'kick him out'."

Wike's logic is sharp and painful. He asked, "A South South person wants to run for his second term and you are proud to kick him out. Then the South South should be happy for you to be vice president? You kicked your own brother out and then you want people to kick you in." That is the kind of political arithmetic that makes you pause and think. Wike also urged Rivers State residents to reject Amaechi at the polls, calling him a disgrace to the state, and added that during Amaechi's time as minister, he brought no development to Rivers.

Now, I have seen many political battles in this country, from Awolowo's time to this moment, and one thing remains constant: we Nigerians have short memories. Amaechi and Wike were once allies, now they are at each other's throats. But the deeper question is not about their personal feud. It is about whether the South South, or any region, should reward a man who openly worked against his own brother. What do you think, does Amaechi deserve the South South's support in 2027, or is Wike right to call him out?
