I Refused to Join a Cult in 300 Level. They Came for Me That Night and I Said No.

Back in 2019, I was in 300 level at FUNAAB, Abeokuta. My roommate, Seyi, and a few of my boys had just joined this secret society they called "The Fraternity." I watched them change overnight. Seyi started wearing all black, carrying a walking stick, and talking like he owned the whole campus. The money came too. One minute we were sharing garri, the next he was buying bottles of Hennessy like it was water. I knew what it was. I just pretended not to see. Then one night, around 2am, they came to my room. Four of them, including Seyi. They said the "grand patron" wanted to see me. They said if I refused, things would not be easy for me in school. I remember looking at Seyi, hoping he would say something, but he just stood there with his chest out like a peacock. Omo, I was scared. But something in me told me that if I entered that thing, I would never come out the same. I told them I was not interested. They left, but they did not forgive me. The next semester was hell. My friends stopped talking to me. People I had never met started calling me "oloshi" and "coward." I got beaten twice on my way to class. I had to start moving with a different crowd, people who also refused. I was alone a lot. But I graduated. Seyi dropped out in his final year after some initiation went wrong. Last I heard, he was in Ibadan doing okada. I am not proud of how isolated I was, but I am proud of that "no." Some things money cannot buy. Your soul is one of them.
