My mother called my remote job a scam again, I did the math for her

My mother called this morning, the usual routine. She asked if I've "found work" yet. I told her I've been working from home for two years now. She said, "Jide, nobody pays somebody to just sit at home and type. That thing is scam."

I tried to explain the USD salary, the meetings at odd hours, the actual work. She wasn't having it. So I did what I do best. I broke it down. I told her, "Mummy, one month of this 'scam' pays more than my whole salary at the fintech in Lagos." She went quiet. Then she said, "Ehn, but you still need to look for real work o."

The funny thing is, she's not alone. My own landlord still thinks I'm unemployed because I'm always home. My neighbors think I'm running a betting business. Lagos has not caught up with remote work, and honestly the data suggests it might never fully accept it. But the money is real and the rent is paid, so I'll let them think what they want.
