Nigerian parents and their 'small small' instructions wey never end
3 months ago
My mother called me yesterday. She said, "Kola, when you come home this weekend, bring that small small thing wey I ask you." Small small thing. That is how e dey start. Before you finish saying "Mummy, which one?" she don already add three more items to the list. By the time the call end, I don collect order for generator parts, new bedsheets, and a phone charger wey go work for her old Nokia.
Na so our parents operate. Dem go tell you "small small thing" and before you know am, you don become personal shopper, logistics company, and bank. No be say dem no get money, na say dem don master the art of making you feel guilty if you ask follow-up questions. You go just hear "Ah, so you no fit do this small thing for your mother?"
I don start keeping a notebook for all the "small small" requests. Last month alone, I spent over 40k on small small things. If I tell my mother say I no get money, she go remind me say "You be hustler, money dey for you." See my brother, the real hustle for Naija no be market, na managing your parents' expectations. Wetin your own family don request from you this week?
