Why I stopped shouting at my son about his crypto business
3 months ago
My son came to me yesterday with his phone, showing me something about crypto tax. He said, Baba, if I make one million naira from crypto, the government will take some for tax. I just looked at him. In my time in the civil service, we did not have this kind of thing. We saved our money in the bank, and if we were lucky, we bought shares in some company that later collapsed.
I used to shout at him when he first started trading. I called it gambling. But now I see that the world has changed. The young people today are trying to survive any way they can. My son is not lazy, he is just looking for opportunity. The Yoruba say, the world belongs to those who are awake. I had to swallow my pride and ask him to explain it to me again, slowly.
I still do not fully understand crypto, but I understand the hunger to provide. I have seen too many young men in Ibadan doing nothing, waiting for government jobs that will not come. So if my son can use his phone to make money, even if it is small, I will support him. But I told him, my son, do not forget the old ways. Save some, give some, and do not put all your eggs in one basket. Patience is the father of wisdom. Who else has a child doing something they do not understand, but they are learning to accept it?
