The day I almost traded Abuja for Canada and my sister's school fees brought me back

Two years ago, I was one signature away from japa. The offer was solid, a good HR role in Toronto, and I had convinced myself it was the only way out. Abuja was squeezing me, the cost of living in the capital was madness, and my job at the parastatal felt like a dead end.I had even told my husband. He was quiet, but supportive. We started talking about selling the car, renting out the house. Then my mother called. Not about me, but about my younger sister. She had been admitted to a federal university, and there was no money for the acceptance fee, let alone the first year. My mother's health was also failing, and she needed someone to manage her hospital visits.I remember sitting in my office, staring at the offer letter, and feeling the weight of two worlds. My dream on one side, my family on the other. I called the recruiter and declined. That night, I cried. Not because I was sad, but because I was relieved. The guilt of leaving had been eating me alive.Today, my sister is in her final year. My mother is stable, and I am still here, navigating the bureaucracy, but with a different kind of peace. Staying wasn't a failure. It was a choice. And it taught me that sometimes, our biggest dreams are the ones we build right where we are planted.
