I Was His Secretary for Two Years. He Was My Boss. The Day It Ended, He Cried.

Back in 2021, I was 26, fresh from NYSC, and I had just gotten a job as a secretary to a big man in Owerri. He was 41, married with two kids, and he had this way of looking at me that made me feel like I was the only person in the room. At first, it was just attention, you know? He would ask about my day, remember my favourite food, pay my transport fare when I said I was broke. I told myself it was just a kind boss. But then the attention started to feel like something else. One evening, he asked me to stay back to help him with some files. Before I knew it, he was telling me how his wife didn't understand him, how I was different. I knew what he was doing. But I was 26, and he was offering me a way out of my one-room apartment in World Bank Housing Estate. So when he kissed me, I let it happen. After that, it became a routine. He would send me money, 50,000 naira here, 70,000 naira there. I started wearing better clothes, sending money home to my mother in the village. My friends would ask me how I was managing, and I would just smile and say God is good. The thing is, I started to fall for him. Not the money, but him. I would get jealous when I saw his wife's picture on his phone. I would pray for her to just disappear. And then one day, his wife found out. She came to the office, not with a fight, but with tears. She looked at me and said, "I know what you've been doing with my husband. I've known for months. I was just waiting to see if you would stop." I felt so small. He didn't even defend me. He just stood there, looking at the floor. The next day, he called me into his office, and he was crying. Begging me to understand that he had to choose his family. He gave me three months' salary and told me to find another job. Omo, I walked out of that office with my head high, but inside I was shattered. I had given him two years of my youth, and all I got was money and a broken heart. I learned that when a man tells you his wife doesn't understand him, what he really means is that he wants you to fill a void he's too scared to fix himself. And when the time comes, you will be the one sacrificed, not him. I am not sorry for what I did, because I was young and desperate. But I am sorry for the woman I became. Now, I tell any young girl who will listen: don't let a man's attention make you forget your own worth. The money will finish, but the shame can follow you for a long time.
