EFCC froze Osun State account and NBA president say e illegal. Who correct?

The EFCC has frozen the Osun State Government account and Governor Ademola Adeleke is crying foul, calling it a plot to cripple the state just days before the 15 August governorship election. The agency says it noticed suspicious movements from the account to "different suspicious accounts since 2 August" and had to act to preserve the funds. They are citing sections of the EFCC Act 2004 and the Money Laundering Act 2022 as their legal backing.

But here is where it gets interesting. The Nigerian Bar Association president, Afam Osigwe, has come out strongly against the move, calling it unconstitutional. He said, "No govment agency or any pesin get di right or di power to restrict withdrawal from di account of any state bicos, first of all, di order fit ground di activities of govment." He went further to advise banks not to obey the EFCC directive because it is not legal. The EFCC's spokesperson, Wilson Uwajuren, insists they only restricted one account, not all, and that they had to take preventive action to stop funds from being moved.

My take? This is a dangerous precedent. If the EFCC can freeze a state government account on mere suspicion, what stops them from doing it to any state that opposes the federal government? The law they quoted does not explicitly give them power to freeze state accounts, and the NBA president has confirmed that. This is not about fighting corruption, it is about political control. And the timing, days before an election, makes it even more suspect. Am I the only one that thinks this is a classic case of overreach that could destabilise our federalism?
