Osun EFCC freeze: Who really controls Nigeria's anti-graft agency?
The EFCC freezing Osun State's accounts is not just another federal-state squabble. When the President claimed ignorance of the operation, it exposed a deeper crisis: a Commander-in-Chief who either cannot control the agencies under his watch or pretends not to see what they do. If the EFCC can freeze a sub-national government's funds without reference to the Attorney-General or the National Security Adviser, then we are no longer dealing with law enforcement but with rogue operatives who answer to nobody.
This reminds me of the Obasanjo years, when Nuhu Ribadu's EFCC struck fear into powerful men. The difference is that back then, the agency had a clear mandate and a visible hand. Today, the confusion is total. Is the EFCC fighting corruption or fighting governors? Is it independent or is it a political weapon? The President's denial, whether true or false, tells us that the Villa is either dangerously lax or dangerously deceptive. Either way, the Nigerian people lose.
Let us be honest: if the EFCC can freeze Osun's accounts today, no state is safe tomorrow. This is not about Governor Ademola Adeleke or any particular administration. It is about federalism and the rule of law. Are we now to believe that a sub-national government can be crippled by an agency acting on its own whims? The Constitution gives states financial autonomy, yet here we are watching a federal agency treat a state like a common debtor. Am I the only one that thinks this is a dangerous precedent for our democracy?
