Why Nigerian Landlords Think They Are God And We Are Just Tenants
3 months ago
My landlord just sent a message that he is coming for inspection tomorrow. The same man who hasn't fixed my bathroom ceiling since January, the one that leaks like a sieve every time it rains. But he wants to inspect MY room to make sure I'm not damaging HIS property.
I swear, these people will charge you for a hole in the wall that was there before you moved in. Then they'll deduct from your deposit for 'wear and tear' like the house is made of gold. My friend's landlord even charged him for changing the light bulb. A light bulb! The man said the bulb was 'original' and my friend replaced it with a fake one. I no fit.
The funniest part? When the rent is due, they will send someone to disturb you at 6am. But when the pipe bursts, they will tell you 'go and buy the fitting yourself, it's just a small thing.' Meanwhile, the house rent is now 1.5 million naira per year for a two-bedroom in Enugu. At this point, I'm just praying for my japa to come through. Who else is tired of paying rent for houses that don't even have water?
