23-year-old law student dies after externship, wey dey tell us something about rest
3 months ago
I saw the story about that 23-year-old law school student wey die for Lagos campus, the one wey die di day dem end externship. My heart just sink. 23 years. Full life ahead. All those nights of reading, the pressure, the hustle wey we call normal. And then nothing.
I remember when I was doing my own law exams long ago, I no go lie, I nearly killed myself with stress. No be the course, na the way we dey push ourselves like machine. We dey think say rest na weakness, say if you no dey suffer you no dey succeed. But who tell us say na so? God is not a vending machine wey you just keep inserting effort and e go produce result. Sometimes the machine just need to cool down.
I have seen things in my counseling experience. Young people wey dey carry depression like say na achievement. Wey dey hide panic attacks because dem no want look weak. My brother, my sister, the grave no dey discriminate. If you die today, the job go still dey, the exam go still dey, but your family go cry. Rest is not a reward you earn after you finish everything. Rest is how you stay alive to finish anything. When last you sleep well? I mean really sleep, not just close eye and think about tomorrow.
