I Refused to Join Cult in 300 Level. They Almost Killed Me for Saying No.

Back in 2019, I was in 300 level at UI, Ibadan. I was a quiet guy, just dey read my books and play football. My roommate, Tayo, was my best friend since 100 level. We shared everything, even food. Then one day, he started acting different. New phone, new sneakers, money dey flow. I was happy for him until he told me the secret. He said he joined 'the brotherhood' and that they wanted me too. I told him no, I don't do such things. He laughed and said it's the only way to survive on campus. For weeks, the pressure increased. They sent guys to talk to me, to threaten me softly. One night, around 2am, they came to my hostel. I heard the door creak and saw three shadows. Tayo was among them. They said I had two options: join or face the consequences. I looked at Tayo, and I saw a stranger. I told them, 'I'd rather die than sell my soul.' They beat me that night. Broke my ribs, left me bleeding on the floor. I spent three weeks in the school clinic. Tayo never came to see me. The isolation was worse than the beating. My friends stopped talking to me. People crossed the road when they saw me. I finished my degree alone, with no one to share notes or celebrate with. Today, I work in a bank in Lagos. I have a family, a car, and peace of mind. Tayo? Last I heard, he dropped out in 400 level after a cult war. He's in and out of prison now. I'm not saying I'm better than him, but I know who made the right choice. The cost of saying no was high, but the cost of saying yes would have been my life. I still believe I won.
