The day I almost lost my nursing license over one tiny mistake
3 months ago
Back in 2015, I was still a junior nurse on the wards, trying to prove myself. One night shift, I was exhausted, running on pure adrenaline. I had two patients, both needing meds, and I mixed up their charts. Gave one patient the other's medication. Didn't realise until the next morning when the ward sister called me into her office.
My heart just dropped. I thought, this is it. My career is over. They will strike me off. I won't be able to send money home to Ibadan. My mother will be ashamed.
The investigation was brutal. I had to write statements, attend meetings, explain myself over and over. I cried every night. But I owned up immediately. Didn't try to blame anyone else. I told them exactly what happened and how sorry I was.
God is faithful. The patient was okay, and I got a formal warning instead of losing my job. But the lesson stayed with me forever.
Now I tell every young nurse I mentor: never work tired, always double-check, and if you make a mistake, own it fast. Your reputation is all you have in this profession. Protect it.
