The Day I Learned the Law Is Not Always Justice
3 months ago
I still remember a case from years ago, a land matter in Ikeja. A widow came to me, her late husband's family had pushed her out of her own compound. She had all the papers, stamped and sealed. But the family had money, and they hired a lawyer who knew how to drag things out. We went to court seven times before the judge even looked at the documents.
That case taught me something. The law is a tool, but justice is a process. And in Nigeria, that process can break a person who doesn't have the funds to keep fighting. My brother, I see it every day in my office. People with valid claims, but no money for the next hearing. People who lose not because they are wrong, but because they are tired.
So when I hear people say 'just go to court, the law will protect you', I smile small. The law can protect you, yes. But you need to know your rights, and you need to be ready to stand. That widow, she won eventually. But it took two years and almost everything she had. Na so e be. The law is not always fast, but it can still be your friend. You just need to know how to use am.
