I Sold My Father's Land to Pay My School Fees. He Still Thinks It's There.

Back in 2019, I was 22 and in my final year at Unilorin. My father had a small plot of land in Ilorin, a gift from his late uncle. He always said it was for my wedding, the only inheritance he could give me. But school fees were choking me. My dad had retired, and the little he had went to my younger siblings. I needed 78,000 naira to clear my carryovers, or I wouldn't graduate. I found a buyer through a friend of a friend. A man from the East who wanted to build a filling station. He paid me 350,000 naira cash, and I signed papers I barely understood. I told myself it was a loan, that I would buy the land back before my father ever noticed. But I didn't. I used the money for fees, rent, and a phone I didn't need. Two years later, my father asked me to help him get the land documents ready for a survey. He wanted to start building. I almost collapsed. I told him the documents were lost, that we needed to go to the ministry to get a duplicate. I've been dodging that conversation ever since. Every time I visit home, I see him looking at the sky, planning a house that will never be his. I know I will have to tell him one day. But every time I open my mouth, the shame closes it. My father trusted me with his last gift, and I sold it for a degree I barely use. I pray for forgiveness, but I know the land is gone forever. If you have something your parent gave you, hold it tight. Some things, once sold, no amount of tears can buy back.
