My wife's phone lit up with a name I didn't recognize. I almost lost 9 years.

Yesterday, my wife left her phone on the dining table while she went to check on our daughter. It buzzed, and I saw a message preview from a name I didn't know. A man's name. The message said, "I still think about that night."

Nwanne, my heart just dropped. Nine years of marriage, one daughter, and my mind went straight to the worst place. I didn't open the phone. I just sat there, sweating, replaying every late return from work, every time she seemed distracted. I was already planning the conversation in my head, the one where I ask her who this person is.

When she came back, I asked her calmly. She looked at the phone and started laughing. It was her younger brother's best friend. The "night" he was referring to was the night they all ate my wife's pepper soup and he almost ended up in the hospital. The message was him begging her not to tell his wife about that disaster. I felt so foolish. I almost let my imagination destroy what we've built over a text message I didn't even fully read.

The thing about life is, our minds can be our worst enemy. In my counseling experience, I have seen couples break over things they assumed, not things they confirmed. Our people say that a man who asks for directions does not get lost. I almost got lost because I was too proud to ask. I thank God for grace. That small moment reminded me that trust is not just about what you see, but also about what you refuse to imagine.
