Back in 2019, I was 19 and just finished secondary school. My mother sent me to stay with her younger sister in Lagos so I could prepare for JAMB. Aunty travelled to Abuja for a month, leaving me with her husband, Uncle Tunde. He was 45, always buying me things, saying I was his favorite. I was naive, I thought it was just kindness. One night, he came into my room with a glass of orange juice. I drank it, feeling sleepy immediately. When I woke up, I was in pain, and he was beside me, saying it was my fault for tempting him. He gave me 20k the next morning, telling me not to tell anyone. I was so ashamed, I took the money and said thank you. I didn't even know what to call what happened. Omo, I carried that secret for years. When I eventually told my mother, she slapped me and called me a liar. She said I was trying to destroy her sister's marriage. My aunt still doesn't know. I see him at family gatherings and he smiles at me like nothing happened. I am not telling this for pity. I am telling it because I want every young girl to know: when an older man is too nice, run.
