I almost lost my landlord's money to a 'friend' and it changed how I see everyone
3 months ago
Last week I was supposed to pay my rent. I had the money, 350k, sitting in my account. Then my 'friend' called, crying, said her mother needed surgery, begged me to send her 200k, promised to refund in 3 days.
I sent it. Omi. Three days became a week. Calls stopped being picked up. I started calculating how to survive on groundnut and garri for the next month. My landlord's agent was already calling me twice daily.
Then she showed up at my door at 11pm, looking like she hadn't slept in days, and handed me the money in cash. Said her mother actually did have surgery, and she sold her phone to pay me back.
I felt so small for doubting her. But also, I learned something. In this Lagos life, the people who come through for you are not the ones who talk the most. They're the ones who show up at your door at 11pm with your own money in their hands.
Who has ever disappointed you and then surprised you in the same week?
