🤫 Confess📍 Street Gist

I sold my late father's land to pay school fees, then lied to my siblings for 20 years

In 1998, my son gained admission to the university. I checked my account, I checked my savings, nothing was there. The salary we were earning in the ministry then could not even feed us talk less of school fees. I sat down in my office, I looked at the file on my table, I prayed small, then I called the man who had been asking to buy my father's plot in the village.

I sold it quietly. I told my siblings say the land was part of our family inheritance, but I did not tell them. I used the money to pay fees, buy books, send transport. My son graduated, he is a doctor now. But every family meeting, every time we talk about the old man's property, I feel it. Last year, during my mother's birthday, my senior brother said we should share the remaining land. I just sat there. I wanted to confess, but the shame was too much.

I finally told my wife last week. She just said, "I knew. You carried that burden alone for too long." The Yoruba say, "Bi oba ti ri ni mo ti n ri." What the king sees, I also see. I learned that secrets are heavy. They weigh you down more than the land you sold. Patience is not the only father of wisdom; honesty is its mother.
