I Carried Olosho in Jos for Two Years. The Night a Client Cried Changed Everything.

This was 2019, I was 25, fresh out of a bad relationship in Jos, and my rent was two months overdue. My landlady had started giving me that look, the one that says 'pay up or pack out.' A friend I used to know from secondary school introduced me to it. She said it was just 'runs,' nothing serious. I told myself I would do it for one month, just to clear my arrears. One month became two years. The girls I met were not who I expected. Some were students, some were married women with children at home, some were even older than my mother. We had a code, we never asked each other real names. The clients were worse, politicians, pastors, businessmen from the south who came to Jos for 'business.' They paid between 20,000 and 50,000 naira per night, depending on how long they wanted you. The money was so good that I stopped thinking about the shame. I would go to church on Sunday, sing in the choir, and on Monday night I would be in a hotel room with a man old enough to be my father. The night that broke me was with a man from Kano, he was maybe 55. After we finished, he just sat on the bed and started crying. Not loud, just tears rolling down his face. He said his wife of 30 years had died the previous year, and he had not touched a woman since. He said he paid for me because he was lonely, not because he wanted sex. I sat there with him until morning, just talking. He gave me 70,000 naira and said 'find something better to do with your life, my daughter.' I quit after that. The money was sweet, but that man's tears showed me what I was becoming, just a body for someone's emptiness. I moved back to my village, took a teaching job that pays 35,000 naira a month. Some months I still struggle to buy food, but at least I sleep without hearing a stranger's voice in my head. To every girl out there doing runs, I am not judging you, but ask yourself what you are running from. The money will finish, the shame will stay.
