Osun election victory came at a terrible cost, 30 lives lost
3 months ago
Pat Utomi has said what many of us were thinking but afraid to voice. He disclosed that Governor Ademola Adeleke won the Osun governorship election at a very high price, with nearly 30 people killed in the process. This is not a small matter. We are talking about human beings, sons and daughters of Osun, whose only crime was participating in the democratic process.
Utomi wrote on his X account, "Osun was won at a high price. Nearly 30 lives were lost to keep evil from having its way. May the souls lost in Osun rest in God's peace and those responsible for such macabre murders come to judgement." He went further to say, "The price of Liberty is eternal vigilance. Aluta continua through January. The mindset of politics and politicians in Nigeria continues to disturb." This man is a respected political economist, a former presidential candidate. When he speaks like this, we should listen.
I have seen people on social media celebrating the victory as if it were a football match. Meanwhile, families in Osun are burying their loved ones. Is this the democracy we fought for? Thirty lives, a few maimed and many mentally crushed, and people are already talking about agreements and accords for the next elections. How sad human lives come to nothing in some people's calculation for power. Be honest, is any political victory in this country worth this kind of price?
