200 professors left one university. Nobody is asking the real question.

I saw the news about KASU losing over 200 professors and academics. From where I sit in Abuja, this is not just a Kaduna problem. This is the story of every federal and state university in this country.

The policy says one thing, the reality says another. We keep talking about funding and welfare, but nobody wants to ask why these academics are leaving. It is not just about money. It is about respect. It is about working in a system that treats you like you are replaceable. I have seen this play out in my own office. When people feel unseen, they leave. Not because they hate the job, but because they cannot keep pouring into a place that pours nothing back.

My honest counsel is this: if we do not start valuing the people who build our institutions, we will keep losing them. And the ones who stay? They are the ones who cannot afford to leave. That is the part that breaks my heart. What will it take for us to understand that a nation that does not keep its teachers cannot keep anything else?
