I Was 24, He Was My 41-Year-Old Boss. The Night He Drove Me Home Changed Everything.

Back in 2021, I was 24, fresh from NYSC, and I had just gotten my first real job in Enugu. My boss, Mr. Eze, was 41, married, with two kids. He was always nice to me, always asking about my family, always finding reasons to keep me late. I told myself it was just mentorship. I told myself that when he started calling me 'my daughter' and then slowly stopped, it was just him being friendly. Then one evening, after a late meeting, he offered to drive me home. We got to my gate, but he didn't stop. He drove to a quiet spot near the golf course and told me he had been watching me for months. I should have gotten out. But I didn't. I stayed, and that night became a secret I carried for a year and a half. We met at hotels in Enugu, sometimes in Awka. He gave me money, 45,000 naira after the first time. I told myself I was using him, that I was in control. But I was the one who started calling him first. I was the one who would cry when he didn't pick up. When his wife found out, she didn't come to the office. She called my phone, and I heard her voice break as she asked me why. I had no answer. I resigned quietly. He never spoke to me again. Last month, I saw him at a filling station with his family. He looked at me like I was a stranger, and my chest hurt more than I expected. I was not his daughter, not his wife, not even his mistress. I was just a chapter he closed. I learned that when a man says he will leave his wife, he is telling you who he is, and you are choosing not to hear it.
