Last year, I was that girl. The one with the fat retainer from a Lagos fintech startup. I was buying smoothies in Lekki like I didn't check my account balance twice before tapping. I even sent my grandmother extra money, feeling like a big girl. Then the money finished. Fast. Family emergencies, a 'friend' who needed urgent help and never paid back, and my own reckless spending. Before I knew it, I was dodging calls and doing mental maths on how to survive till month end.I started borrowing from friends. Small amounts. 'Just till Friday.' The shame was real. I remember standing in front of my mirror, practicing how to ask my guy for a loan without sounding desperate. I felt like a fraud. One night, I was eating Indomie with eggs for the third time that week, and I just started laughing. Because the thing is, I had been so busy looking rich that I forgot to be smart. I was rich on paper, but broke in reality. That season humbled me. Taught me that 'soft life' is a scam if you don't have a safety net. Now, I save first, flex later. And I haven't seen that 'friend's' money till today. Lesson learned the hard way.
