This happened back in 2022, right after my papa died. We buried him in our village near Owerri, and the whole extended family gathered. The day after the burial, my uncle, my papa's younger brother, called a family meeting. I was 27 then, the first son, and I thought it was about sharing the inheritance. Omo, I was not ready for what he said. He stood up, cleared his throat, and told us he had sold the family land, the one my papa and his brothers inherited from our grandfather. He said he sold it to a developer from Lagos for 18 million naira. He said he used the money to settle his own debts and send his son abroad. He did not even look at my mother when he said it. My mother just sat there, her wrapper tight around her, and she did not cry. She just asked him, 'Which land?' He said the one by the main road, the one we all knew was for the family. The one my papa used to say would be for my children's school fees. My uncle said since my papa was dead, he was now the eldest, and the land was his to manage. See, the thing is, my papa never wrote a will. We trusted family. My uncle said the developer had already paid, and the papers were signed. There was nothing we could do. My mother has not spoken to him since that day. We don't even greet his family at church. The land is now a filling station. What I learned is that in this life, even blood can sell you for money. If your papa has land, make sure the papers are in your name before he goes. Because the family you think you have may just be waiting for him to die to take everything. I still drive past that filling station sometimes and I just shake my head. God knows, I will never let that happen to my own children.
