I was 27, just back from NYSC in Kwara, and my uncle in Kano told me he had a "business" for me. A house in Sabon Gari where girls lived. He said all I had to do was collect money, keep the place running, and make sure nobody caused trouble. He said it like it was normal work. The first month I made 380,000 naira. More than I had ever held at once. I was buying clothes, sending small money home, telling my mother I was into "logistics." The girls were from all over , Aba, Ilorin, one from Cameroon. Some were there by choice, some were there because of debt. I stopped asking which was which because the answer was never clean. The clients were the part nobody prepares you for. Soldiers, civil servants, even men who came with their wedding rings still on. One Alhaji used to send his driver to book the whole place for a night. I used to stand outside and count the cars and think, so this is how the country runs. What broke me was a girl called Blessing. She was 19. Her uncle had sold her to settle a debt of 150,000 naira. I saw her cry one morning and I could not look at myself. That night I packed my things, left the keys with the gateman, and took the first bus out of Kano. My uncle called me a fool. Maybe I was. But I know this: money you make from another person's pain will always find a way to leave you. Today I sell phone accessories at Computer Village. The money is small but I sleep well. That one, nobody can collect from me.
